Prison Project

YourStance and the Health and Justice Learning Hub (HJLH) are proud to launch their new ‘Zero Responder’ video, which teaches viewers simple, life-saving skills.

This 15 minute video, filmed in a prison, gives viewers the ability to learn the basics of how to save a life which includes CPR, the recovery position and bleeding, within the context of what a person in prison may experience.

YourStance is a charity run by healthcare professionals, teaching young people at risk life-saving skills. With over seven years’ experience delivering sessions in prisons, the charity was excited to build on this work with a further collaboration with the HJLH — not only continuing to deliver Zero Responder sessions across London, but coming together to create a film capturing the impact and message of these sessions.

Developed as part of the organisations’ ongoing partnership, the script was co-produced with former prison residents, and the film was created by Inside Job Productions, who brought the content of the sessions to the screen in such a meaningful, clear and powerful way.

Ana Waddington, YourStance’s Founder and CEO, said:  “This film is one of the proudest moments in YourStance’s journey. We began in prisons, and it is right that we did. Partnering with the Health and Justice Learning Hub, we created this film so that every resident can access it, making our training accessible to all who need it in prisons. It gives residents the skills to save lives, the same skills and responsibility we give to any young person in our communities. Everyone deserves the chance to be the difference in someone’s darkest moment, and I am honoured that we got to create this together.”

Dr Sarah Allen, the HJLH Programme Director said “The HJLH exists to try to share and embed learning from patient safety incidents and tragic deaths in custody. The work with YourStance and the film we have created is the embodiment of this. Taking information from real incidents, we look for changes that will have the greatest impact. Our hope is that spreading learning about life-saving interventions amongst the prison population will save lives. The film was co-created with YourStance, people with lived experience and health and prison staff to ensure it is meaningful, impactful, safe and realistic. We are indebted to the NHSE commissioners and staff in HMPPS who made this possible and are supporting its roll-out”.

The launch of the film caps a successful year for YourStance’s partnership with the HJLH, during which the two organisations have worked together to bring life-saving education into settings where it is often hardest to reach people who need this information. Over the past year, nearly 300 people have attended sessions, with 90% reporting increased confidence in life-saving skills as a result. One attendee reflected: “The way I was taught today, I understood everything. I was very happy and felt like myself for an hour, not in jail.”

YourStance  are extremely proud of this innovative film and look forward to further collaboration with the HJLH in the years ahead.
